Azure Resource Tags Explained | Microsoft Azure | AZ-104 & AZ-500 Lab
AZURE RESOURCE TAGS EXPLAINED
Organize, Manage, and Control Azure Resources Effectively
Microsoft Azure Certification Lab | AZ-104 & AZ-500 | Mr. X-2
๐ Introduction
In Microsoft Azure, creating resources is easy. However, managing and organizing those resources at scale is where most professionals struggle.
Without proper organization:
- Costs become difficult to track
- Ownership becomes unclear
- Security and governance suffer
In this lab, we focus on Azure Resource Tags, a simple yet powerful feature used daily in real-world Azure environments.
๐ท️ What Are Azure Resource Tags?
Azure Resource Tags are key-value pairs that allow you to add metadata to Azure resources.
- Identify ownership
- Track costs by department or project
- Filter and manage resources easily
- Apply governance and automation
Tags are heavily tested in AZ-104 and AZ-500 certification exams.
๐ฅ️ Lab Overview: What You Will Learn
- Create a Virtual Machine in Azure
- Apply tags to Azure resources
- Filter resources using tags
- Understand real-world tagging use cases
- Clean up resources safely
The lab is explained using a story-based approach with Mr. X-2, Kasper, and Sofia.
๐ ️ Step 1: Create a Virtual Machine
- Virtual Machine Name: DKResize-VM
- Resource Group: DK-Cloud-Lab-RG
- Image: Windows Server 2019
- Size: B1s
- Disk Type: Standard SSD
๐ก Spot Instance Explained
A Spot Instance is an Azure virtual machine that runs on unused compute capacity at deep discounts. These virtual machines can be interrupted at any time and are suitable only for non-critical workloads.
For this lab, Spot Instance is intentionally disabled.

- Tag Name: Department
- Tag Value: IT
๐ Step 3: Filter Resources by Tag
Filter resources using:
- Department = IT
๐งน Step 4: Clean Up Resources
- Delete all created resources
- Prevent unnecessary costs
- Keep the environment secure and clean
๐ Real-World Importance of Azure Tags
- Cost management and chargeback
- Security and compliance
- Automation and governance
- Operational clarity
๐ Certification Focus
